Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1974
What is your primary product or service?
Our dog training club has many facets and dozens of members. We have several instructors with experience ranging from mid-level to top-level obedience training and competition. Our classes begin with puppies under 7 months of age. The next beginner class is Beginner One for dogs over 7 months of age who have no prior training.
Those who seek training for their dogs have a wide range of options. We have some who take Beginner One simply to solve behavioral issues and to improve their relationship with their dogs so that the dog will come, sit, down, stay, and walk with them. Some of our clients find training to be fun and a great way to build a stronger bond with their dogs, so they go on to higher levels of training, such as retrieve, jumping, scent discrimination, etc. Some choose to compete and others do it simply for their own enjoyment.
Clients have the option to apply for membership, which has perks as well as sharing fellowship with other dog lovers. We do some public service such as exhibitions to help Vanderburgh County Humane Society, to educate the public about different breeds or dog and about dog safety.
Our club is involved in Agility and Rally as well as Obedience. We hold more than ten trials per year. Our largest trials are in May and July and are held at the Metro Sports Center. The public is welcome to visit (only dogs entered in the trials are permitted in the building). Please check our web site evansvilleobedienceclub.com for more information.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
We love dogs and we want to have the best experience possible for both ourselves and our dogs. To do that we realized that we had to be the "leader of our pack" rather than letting our dogs be in control. Knowing how to train a dog is essential to a happy, harmonious life. Once we began to learn about training, many of us realized that there is no limit to how much we can learn and do with our dogs. Our dogs love to work in Agility and Obedience. Dogs need something to do besides play and the interaction between handler and dog strengthens the bond.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Our instructors are volunteers who teach because they love to do it. All proceeds go to our club to maintain our facilities. All of our instructors have demonstrated and proven knowledge and ability in handling and training dogs. All have earned obedience titles with their own dogs. We have a large facility with a working ring that is 40' by 50' with a cushioned mat floor. It is climate controlled. Training is our only focus. We are not a pet store.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have our club building at 1400 N Cullen Ave. We hope to eventually buy a larger property and build an even larger facility.
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located at 1400 N Cullen Ave in Evansville Indiana. Our building is on the east side of the road and sits back about 100' from the road. We have a sign by the road that is clearly visible.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash and checks.
Which areas do you service?
We have members from Indiana and Kentucky. We do have people who travel hundreds of miles for our trials.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Our club is run by the board of directors which are elected by the membership.
What are your hours of operation?
Classes are held Monday - Thursday. The specific times are listed on our website.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
To refer a friend because, through our classes, he found a greater enjoyment in his relationship with his dog.
